Registration , Triage, & Lab
About our Clinic
In partnership with Cal Poly Pomona, we have been able to secure our future clinic location at Capilla San Miguel Arcángel. Located in the town of La Misión, 10 minutes inland from the scenic Mexican Federal Highway 1, and an hour into Mexico from the San Ysidro border crossing. With a population of just below a thousand, and a lack of healthcare services in the area, we see the potential for the residents of La Misión to benefit greatly from our services.

Services
All volunteers are expected to respect patient privacy and confidentiality.

Registration
- Patients will sign up on a first come, first serve basis.
- Each patient has a file with a Demographics (patient assessment) sheet attached, and a Medical Record Number (MRN) which is used to track patient files.
- Volunteers will check in patients by recording their name, finding their patient file or making a new file for new patients and attaching new provider assessment sheets to each patients file.
- Runners will take the file to triage, making sure to log in the patient on our patient tracker system. Meanwhile, patients will wait to be called by the next available Triager.
Triage
- To be qualified to triage, you must be a Certified EMT, Nursing student, Certified Nursing Assistant, Licensed Medical Assistant, or other licensed healthcare member, provider trained, and experienced in taking vital signs.
- Triage volunteers are responsible for collecting the following information:
- chief complaint
- medical history
- current medications
- allergies
- height
- weight
- vital signs
- Triage volunteers are expected to:
- know normal and dangerous vital sign ranges
- practice proper hand hygiene
- understand the importance of detail when collecting information
- respect patient privacy and confidentiality
- Triage volunteers who do not speak spanish will be paired with a Spanish translator
- knowledge of spanish medical terminology is required for translators
Lab
- Lab services offered:
- Blood glucose
- HbA1c
- 10-panel urinalysis
- Pregnancy test
- Lab volunteers are expected to:
- respect patient privacy and confidentiality
- know normal blood glucose ranges and which values are considered dangerous
- utilize appropriate safety measures when handling needles and body fluids
- practice proper hand hygiene
Provider Rooms
- Providers from a variety of backgrounds, MD, DO, PA, NP, and more, provide medical consultation services to patients.
- Two volunteers will be paired with a provider.
- at least 1 volunteer will be a translator (if needed)
- volunteers will be responsible for scribing and calling patients
- The provider room is “ER Style,” where one facility is broken into smaller rooms by curtains and dividers.
- For volunteers, this is a great opportunity to:
- observe healthcare professionals make diagnoses and treat patients
- network with providers and ask them questions about medical school, their specialty, what being a healthcare provider is like, or anything else you’d like to know
- most importantly, understand the health issues underserved communities like La Misión are facing
Physical Therapy
- Patients will either sign up for physical therapy or will be referred by a provider.
- Volunteers will shadow and assist Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPT) and/or Physical Therapy Assistants (PTA)
- Volunteers are expected to:
- respect patient privacy & confidentiality
- call for patients
- assist providers in teaching therapeutic exercises to patients
- For volunteers interested in pursuing a career in Physical Therapy: This is a great opportunity to learn more about the profession, while also obtaining a better understanding of the diseases and injuries community members are experiencing as it relates to movement and everyday life.
Public Health
- The Public Health Officer will direct volunteers in the distribution of donations such as food, clothing, hygiene essentials, etc.
- Public Health volunteers will be tasked with giving educational presentations for waiting patients on monthly topics such as disease prevention.
Disclaimer:
At no point will volunteers be authorized to perform any procedure, regardless of complexity. No one, including providers, will be able to authorize volunteers to perform any kind of procedure, and procedures are only to be performed by licensed and clinically trained professionals. Behavior of this kind may result in immediate disciplinary action, including revocation of club membership and legal penalties. If a provider asks you or gives you permission to perform something, please respectfully decline and direct them to your station lead if they have any questions.
